Dark Light

DARK LIGHT

Mathew 6:22-23 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.  But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!

They say the eyes are windows to the soul.  Perhaps, rather than windows they are, instead, beacons.  How much more descript can one get than these two simple verses?  Light is a very deceptive term.  We know that visible light is composed of a spectrum of wavelengths which fall in a small band our eyes can see.  White light or the full spectrum of light can be seen when an object reflects all visible wavelengths.  The reflection of the full spectrum of light is seen by the eye as white light.  Conversely, the absorption of the full spectrum of light by an object is seen by the eye as black or darkness.

Let’s consider the soul as the source or emitter of light.  Through the eyes or in the eyes we can perceive either light or darkness.  As the eyes indicate, so the body follows.  “The light of the body is the eye: …”  If the eye emits the light of a dark soul, the body will follow the way of darkness in its myriad actions, motives, and character.  If, on the other hand, the eye emits the light of an enlightened soul, the body will follow the single, clear, or right way in its actions, motives, and character.

The eyes reflect the activity of the soul.  If the soul is a taker, a self-absorbed entity, and bent on evil pursuits for personal gain, then the soul simply becomes a sponge absorbing all the light and emitting only darkness.  The eyes then become dark embers of deception and deceit.

When the eyes reflect the activity of a loving soul, then a brilliant emanation and brightness is clearly seen by others.  Such a soul gives more than it receives and considers others before self while pursuing the way everlasting.  These are the souls of believers, souls with hearts indwelled by the Holy Spirit, reflecting the brightness of God within.

Have you asked anyone lately what they see in your eyes?

Have you examined your actions, motives, and character?

How about looking in the mirror?

Do you see darkness or brightness shining from the beacons of your soul?
